Panels

Moon allows you to create custom gene panels that can be used to manually filter variants data in the Moon Filter view. Panels are only available within your Moon lab account.

The Panels menu can be accessed through the Lab menu at the top left of the screen. The overview page lists all available panels, with their current number of genes included, latest version number, date of the last update, lab member who performed the latest updates and the possibility to remove any of the listed panels.

The search field allows you to search for a specific panel based on either the panel name, or the name of a gene included in a panel.

Creating a new panel

To create a new panel, simply click the New Panel button at the top right of the Panel screen. Enter a name for the new panel and a list of the relevant gene names separated by spaces. A note can be optionally added to provide some additional information. Upon saving, version 1 of the new panel is created.

Updating an existing panel

To make changes to an existing panel, select the panel of interest on the Panel overview screen and click Edit panel.

Upon editing, you will have the possibility to add or remove genes from the existing panel, and to add a new note, that will be saved with the updated version of the panel. The panel name is not editable.

After saving the changes to a panel, a new version of the panel is created. The overview page of the panel of interest now shows the updated version of the panel with its new version number, the included genes and also lists the genes that were added or removed as compared to the previous version. In addition, the overview page also shows all previous versions of the panel, with all previous updates, dates of updates, notes etc.

Gene names that are not recognised by Moon will be highlighted in red and a warning will be displayed. If the Panel is still saved as such, these unrecognised genes are not considered for filtering in the Filter view.

Manual filtering with panels

In the Filter view, the ‘Panels’ filter allows to filter the rare variants in a VCF based on the in silico panels in your Moon lab account. Simply select one or more panels from the dropdown menu, either by typing in the panel(s) of choice, or selecting them from the list. Upon applying one or more panels, the filter results show all variants located in genes that are included in at least one of the selected panels. The Panels filter always uses the latest version of the selected panels.

In order to avoid false negative searches, Moon also takes into account synonyms of gene names and previous gene names of genes included in the panel, to perform filtering.

From within the filter view, it is possible to access the Panels overview page by using the ‘Create new panel’ link in the Panels filter.
