Filter sets

Moon allows you to create custom filter sets that can be applied to all rare variants in the Filter view. These Filter sets are specific for a Moon lab account.

An overview of all saved Filter sets can be found through the Lab menu at the top left of the screen.

The overview page lists all available filter sets, with their name, filters included, date of creation and the name of the person that created the filter set.

Creating a new filter set

New filter set is created from within the Filter view by using the ‘Filter Set’ panel at the top left of the filter screen.

The combination of manually set filters can be saved by clicking the ‘Save current filters as Filter Set’ link. Upon clicking this link, Moon will request a name for the new Filter set. As soon as this is saved, the Filter set will be visible on the Filter set page through the Lab menu, and in the Filter view. There, it will also be indicated who created the Filter set and when.

Filter sets that are created from within a family case will include specifications in terms of segregation. These Filter sets can however be applied to single cases as well, whereby segregation will then not be taken into account.

When applying a Filter set that was created on a single case to a family case, be aware that segregation filters would need to be applied manually, or added to a new Filter set.

Maintaining existing Filter sets

Once created, Filter sets can not be edited or removed.

Existing filter sets can be inactivated, in which case they will not be available for filtering anymore in the Filter view. A Filter set can inactivated by clicking the Inactivate Filter Set button on the detailed overview page of the Filter set in question. After inactivating the Filter set, this page will also show the details of who inactivated the filter set and when.

If a defined Filter set includes a gene panel which is later on removed from Moon, the Filter set will continue to include the panel and it will still be applied as part of its filters.

In order to apply a predefined Filter set to the rare variants in your VCF, simply select the Filter set of choice from the Filter set dropdown menu. Only active Filter sets will be available in this menu.

When a Filter set is selected, all filters (eg. Quality, Frequency, Panels…) will be set to their predefined values. Within the ‘Filter Set’ filter panel, the name of the applied Filter set will be displayed. All variants on the right of the screen will now be in accordance with the predefined Filter set.

Manually changing any filter criterium will remove the selected Filter Set.

Traceability

The act of selecting a specific Filter Set while manually filtering will automatically be recorded. The details on which Filter sets were applied during manual analysis will automatically be added as ‘Applied filter sets’, displayed on the Report page in Moon. Also, these filter sets, including the complete gene panels included by these will be listed as an Appendix in the PDF report.
